Two tours celebrating the career of Thomas Telford:

1. Thomas Telford Tour - West

This tour explores Telford’s civil engineering skills, which helped develop the transport infrastructure of Shropshire: The formation of the Ellesmere Canal Company in North Shropshire and the Chirk Aqueduct near Oswestry. Bold and outstanding projects of the day.

The tour starts at the statue of Clive of India in the Square, Shrewsbury, then travels over the Welsh Bridge towards Shelton, joining the A5 near Montford Bridge.

The route includes Nescliffe (the hill associated with the highway robber Humphrey Kynaston), Knockin, Llanymynech (where Watt’s Dyke the ancient defences of Offa’s Dyke can be seen), Morda, Oswestry (Oswald’s tree & a large hill fort), Chirk, Whittington, Welsh Frankton; Ellesmere (Shropshire’s lakeland), Myddle; returning to Shrewsbury past The Maltings (the fIrst iron framed building) and CastlefIelds.

2. Thomas Telford Tour - East
