Historic Shrewsbury Tour

The Square Shrewsbury Shrewsbury, the county town is noted for its medieval buildings. This tour enhances the story of the town by including Shrewsbury’s hinterland, visiting sites from before the times of the Normans to the present day.

Start in the Square in Shrewsbury by the statue of Clive of India and noticing the carved figure on the front of the Old Market Hall; past The Mount (Darwin’s home) on the way to Montford Bridge where one of Thomas Telford’s roads crosses the River Severn.

Following a loop of the Severn near Fitz allows a visit to Battlefield Church built on the site of The Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403 and where ‘Harry Hotspur’ lost his life.

Continuing the loop enables the tour to include Haughmond Abbey; Attingham Park and the Roman city of Viroconium (Wroxeter). From here a quiet road leads onto Acton Bumell Castle and Church returning to Shrewsbury Abbey via a glimpse of Condover Hall.
