FOOD and COUNTRYSIDE

Up until the beginning of the Industrial revolution farmers were the masters of society. The Industrial revolution changed all this because it promised so much material wealth which lead droves of people from the country to the towns to where the wealth was being created. Over the last 30 years globalization and the IT revolution has transformed the countryside yet again. Farmland being used for industrialized commodity farming and redundant farm stead’s being converted into houses.

Facts

• 80% of food passes through supermarket networks.
• 53% of Carbon emissions in the UK is accountable from food (ie from growing to when it reaches your plate)

With rising costs of phone, gas and electricity, council tax, petrol and supermarket food bills are you finding that your finances will not stretch to cover the fun parts of life like eating out and holidays abroad? If so this is the time to have a radical change.

Property developers have over the last few years built many new houses in the town center. Most of you by now will have finished creating friendly and comfortable homes for yourself and family. Now is the time to tackle the outside of your homes. Small gardens, balcony’s, window boxes are valuable areas of space to provide highly nutritious fruits, salads and herbs. At very low cost, while increasing the town center vegetation. Lets use this year to learn to have green fingers so for next year being 200 years celebration of Charles Darwin we can have a live ecological history story of Darwin. Darwin spent many hours of his childhood in Shrewsbury observing plants, insects, etc. My vision is that in August a judge would decide which section of the town center had the best display, ie Wyle Cop Traders, Mardol Traders, Town Wall residents, Barker Street traders, The Railway Station and Chester Street, etc.
